It happened again, 2 "innocent bystanders" shot in separate incidents

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating two shootings that occurred on Easter Sunday. In each of these cases, someone was hurt, and police say the victim was not the intended target. This is the fourth time in the past two weeks that Milwaukee police say an innocent bystander became a gunshot victim.

Laquita Jenkins was watching five children at her home on Monday afternoon, April 21st. Normally, she would have had no problem with some of them spending the day in the front yard.

Jenkins says she's questioning whether the children should stay in the house even though the weather is getting warmer.

That's because on Easter Sunday night, police say a 24-year-old woman walking up the street near Jenkins' home (near 18th and Vine) was shot just before 9:00 p.m.

Police believe the woman will survive -- and say they do not believe she was the intended target.

"To know a lady got shot out here, that`s like, 'wow, should I let my kids stay outside and play?'" Jenkins said.

About three hours earlier on Easter Sunday, police responded to a shooting near 11th and Atkinson.

Police say a 23-year-old man was driving when he was shot.

Police believe he, too was not the intended target.

Sunday's shootings are similar to a pair of incidents that occurred recently in Milwaukee.

On April 7th, 29-year-old Dricka Hodges died while waiting at a stoplight near 24th and Center.

Police say someone shot into a crowd, and one of the bullets struck and killed Hodges.

Two days later, a two-year-old boy was shot and injured when someone shot into a house near 4th and Keefe.

As random citizens become shooting victims, neighbors who live near where these shootings occurred say they're reconsidering some of the privileges they give to their children.

"It`s a choice a mother or father has to make for their kids` safety and your safety. I may just be walking to the garbage and the next thing you know, someone`s coming down the alley and the next thing you know, I`m an innocent bystander and I got shot for no reason," Jenkins said.

Police say they have not made any arrests in connection with Sunday's shootings.
