OKLAHOMA (CNN) — Some teens are trying out a bizarre viral trend called “Beezin.” It involves people applying a light layer of Burt’s Bees lip balm to their eyelids.

Those who are into “Beezin” say it adds to the experience of being drunk or high. Others say it helps keep them alert.

So what exactly causes that tingling sensation in Burt’s Beeswax? Dr. Brett Cauthen at Today Clinic looked over the ingredients.

“It’s the peppermint oil that’s causing the burning sensation, and I suppose some people think that that’s kind of funny.”

Also keep in mind, we are talking about your eyes, one of the most sensitive parts of your body. So “Beezin” could cause pink eye-like symptoms.

“The peppermint oil in the lip balm is a very strong irritant and can cause inflammation in the eye, redness of the eye and swelling.”

Dr. Cauthen is warning parents to keep an eye on viral trends and make sure their children are not trying them
