Neighbors hope fatal crash is reminder to drivers to take foot off the accelerator

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A 40-year-old man died after a collision between his car and a school bus. It happened near 60th & Villard -- an intersection which those who live nearby say sees an awful lot of speeders!

"People be flying! Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt flying down 60th Street," a neighbor told FOX6 News.

"There is some racing. Sometimes twice the speed limit. It's just stayed bad over the last five years I would say," neighbor Jim Bagley said.

Bagley says for more than two decades, he has seen more traffic in the area near 60th & Villard -- and also, more motorists that seem to be in a big hurry.

"This stop sign right here, we've got traffic going straight through without slowing down. To them, it's just a yield sign or non-existent," Bagley said.

Bagley says crashes have become a weekly occurrence -- and says at least once a year, he'll see the fatal intersection of speed and recklessness.

On Friday, a 40-year-old man struck a light pole before slamming into a school bus, clipping another car and flipping over.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital -- but the driver of the car died at the scene.

Police say the driver failed to stop at a traffic signal while traveling at a high rate of speed that witnesses believe was more than twice the speed limit.

"80 miles-an-hour down a 30 mile-per-hour street," Bagley said.

"It's like the light is a pit stop, and then they take off again," another neighbor said.

Neighbors say they hope the fatal accident is a reminder to drivers to depend less on the accelerator, and more on the posted rules of the road.
