MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A six-year-old boy was struck by a school bus at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Dr. and Mineral St. on Milwaukee's south side on Wednesday, May 21st. The child died from his injuries.

Milwaukee police say the school bus was southbound on Cesar Chavez when it struck the child just before 4 p.m. The boy was crossing Cesar Chavez at the time.

The 24-year-old woman who was driving the school bus is cooperating with the investigation.

Camille Barnes watched in terror. She says the child darted across the street.

"He came out so fast -- nobody could have gotten him. Nobody. There was no way (the school bus driver) could have seen him because she's up so high. The baby was completely by itself. I don't know where the mama was. I heard the mother screaming and hollering. My heart goes out to the family," Barnes said.

Police said on Thursday, May 22nd, there were two children on the bus at the time of this incident.

They were not injured.

Another witness described a heartbreaking scene.

"A lot of people crying and screaming. When they put the blanket over the baby, that's when I just walked away. I couldn't handle it. Just hold tight onto your babies -- especially in high traffic areas like this," the witness said.

Investigators say it is unclear at this time who is at fault -- only saying their investigation continues.

so sad made me cry and I dont know the family or the little sweet boy..
I dont care that he was unattended, We are suppose to watch out for our children, cause they are our ‘FUTURE’
Please Milwaukee, remember this and never forget it…

Please do not judge until you hear the full report. This child may have impairments and unexpectedly ran out of his mother’s sight and due to these impairments did not understand street safety.

If parents would actually WATCH and also WALK WITH their children, this would not happen at all. Too many children are left to run around and play on the streets or to run errands blocks away because their parents are too lazy or confident of the neighborhood.

I saw this whole thing and yes there where about 5 children in the bus. I also have prove of it as well and those children where brought out of the bus and where tranported to another.

When ever there is ANY incident involving a school bus.. even if it’s a break down, another bus is sent to get any kids off the first bus. It’s a safety thing and the parents do not need to worry that their children are left on the bus as it sits waiting for mechanics to show up.
As far as the Mother not wanting to forgive the bus driver, it was an accident and if she carries this grudge for a long time, it will only fester into something she won’t have control over. Perhaps she should seek some help to help her deal with this. And as far as the child walking off by himself, for something that looked like a busy corner, he shouldn’t have been able to leave the house, in a diaper, without shoes on. My heart goes out to the family AND the bus driver.. both will have some serious emotional damage from this.

Yea I agree we do have to watch out for children. But at the same time where were the parents and why would you let a 6 year old be out on their own anyway. Especially unattended crossing any street. My son Is 6 and I wouldn’t let him check the mail box without someone watching him. My heart goes out to their family cause we do make mistakes just wished the baby didn’t have to die in the mistakes.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about this subject but have you also noticed that people actually own up to what they are saying by using their name.. unlike you, “Anonymous”. Seems like you are the one placing judgment on everyone’s comments. Stop spamming the page!

Are you a robot? I feel sad that this happened to this family BUT if he was impaired then he should of been watched even more!!

Children with impairments should be restrained if they are unable to control themselves in public places.

Its sad to know this is happening but yet how the hell dirent the stupid school bus driver watch our more I know its hard but knowing how busy 16th street is you gonna tell me you can’t be more caution with our children. Hope the bus driver gets what she deserves n my condolences to the family

Maria if the bus driver should “get whats coming to her” then so should the irresponsible mother. It was her absolute duty to insure the safety of HER child and she failed miserably. I feel for the mother- I really do, but im sick of her and others blaming the bus driver. Control your kids!!!

it wasn’t the mom she has 4 kids how is she going to handle 4 kids at once I know her already for 1 year and she toked good care of them the little kid he wasn’t good he was sick every time my mom took care of him he would hit his self in the head and the mom took him to the doctor and they said that he had to wear a helmet for 1 year and everyone who is judging the mom its not her fault please stop and the reason she wasn’t crying it was because she was in shock but when I went to her house she was crying during talking to her mom. he was a really bad little boy he used to hit people and brake things so don’t judge people you don’t know them.

First n foremost, RAUL was not a BAD kid. Don’t EVER n YOUR LIFE SAY THAT ABOUT HIM!!!!
He did not HIT NOBODY!!! Break things yes like other kids. Some things people as n yourself should never say about the DECEASE to make things better. The FACTS are WRITTEN, Mother should have been watching her child sad to say. Its the not the first time he got out the house from what ive heard. We as parents have n must do better. I kno its not easy raising a Special Child, and im not saying she didn’t love him, But she have to take balme for her ACTIONS as well….
      R.I.P.

And you said she had 4kids, What the hec does that mean???
My Mom has 16. She raise all of them and one was Special needs. They all have College Degrees and maintaining they own Families. Its not easy but its a Job n it takes Patients Love and Care. And if she felt it was to much she have kept her legs CLOSED… Been Responsible either Wrapped it up or Kept them Close…IJS
