6-year-old boy struck by school bus, dies from his injuries

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A six-year-old boy was struck by a school bus at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Dr. and Mineral St. on Milwaukee's south side on Wednesday, May 21st. The child died from his injuries.

Milwaukee police say the school bus was southbound on Cesar Chavez when it struck the child just before 4 p.m. The boy was crossing Cesar Chavez at the time.

The 24-year-old woman who was driving the school bus is cooperating with the investigation.

Camille Barnes watched in terror. She says the child darted across the street.

"He came out so fast -- nobody could have gotten him. Nobody. There was no way (the school bus driver) could have seen him because she's up so high. The baby was completely by itself. I don't know where the mama was. I heard the mother screaming and hollering. My heart goes out to the family," Barnes said.

Police said on Thursday, May 22nd, there were two children on the bus at the time of this incident.

They were not injured.

Another witness described a heartbreaking scene.

"A lot of people crying and screaming. When they put the blanket over the baby, that's when I just walked away. I couldn't handle it. Just hold tight onto your babies -- especially in high traffic areas like this," the witness said.

Investigators say it is unclear at this time who is at fault -- only saying their investigation continues.
