Milwaukee Water Works makes progress on water main breaks

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It has been one week since Milwaukee started seeing a slew of water main breaks. Even though the Howard Avenue Plant is still shut down, we've likely seen the worst of it.

It was all due to added pressure in the system when the city shut down one of its two water treatment plants, but there is something satisfying about making slow, and steady progress.

On north 40th Street, Bernise Gough is making progress on an old house, but water main breaks have plagued the north side.

"It's like you take one step forward, two steps backward, one step forward," said Gough.

There are bound to be a few surprises when fixing up an old house, but the same goes for the city.

A few water main breaks quickly rose to 20, and then 50 by the end of last weekend. 88 at last count.

Though the rush of water and roar from heavy equipment has all but evaporated, there have only been six breaks in the last three days. It appears the system has leveled off.

In other words, progress is being made, and work continues to get the Howard Avenue Water Treatment Plant back online.
