Old Glory flies: Over 1,600 flags at Wisconsin Memorial Park for Memorial Day

BROOKFIELD (WITI) -- If you've headed down Capitol Drive in Brookfield over the past few days -- you've likely seen the thousands of American flags flying in honor of those who have served our country -- and have given their lives for our freedom.

In honor of Memorial Day -- over 1,600 flags are flying at Wisconsin Memorial Park.

Each flag was given to the family of a fallen soldier -- and then donated back to the burial grounds.

The park's director says it is humbling to see so many people stop by to pay their respects.

"To see so many families, so many generations in fact. You have everything from children, to I just met a 93-year-old man who spent two years in the hospital after being wounded in World War II. It's wonderful to see that collection of folks come to Wisconsin Memorial Park," Eric Curtis said.

Wisconsin Memorial Park has been hosting events throughout Memorial Day weekend -- including a fundraiser for "Operation Not Alone" -- a charity that uses donated funds to purchase supplies and non-perishable food items to send to deployed soldiers. The organization also purchases material to make blankets for the soldiers.

Founded in 1929, Wisconsin Memorial Park is one of the most beautiful, prestigious burial grounds in the state.

Stunning maple, oak, ash, birch and pine trees grace its expansive grounds, and various types of wildlife frequent the park.

Gracefully curving boulevards wind around sweeping lawns with blended shrubbery, giving the area a park-like appearance.

Bronze memorials are set level with the lush green lawn.

Wisconsin Memorial Park proudly serves people of all faiths.

Numerous programs throughout the year are held in the park, including Avenue of Flags, Good Friday Service, Memorial Day Services and the Holiday Program.

Many burial options are available at Wisconsin Memorial Park including traditional ground burial, mausoleum crypts and lawn crypts, and numerous cremation alternatives.

Elegant fountains, imported statues and other artistic features can be found in the outdoor garden mausoleum and traditional ground burial areas.

The Garden of the Apostles was the first garden crypt area in the state.

It was developed in 1956 and includes four original bronze statues, each of which is 8 feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds.

The Garden of the Last Supper is placed inside an inviting garden and is the world’s largest carving from a single block of solid marble.

It provides the dignity of above ground burial at a cost no greater than traditional ground burial.

Striking architecture accents the Gardens of Eternal Life, an above ground burial facility.

It features two outdoor chapels, a series of gardens and Liberty Court, where an exact replica of the Liberty Bell is located.
