New leadership: Milwaukee Wave announces new head coach, assistant coach

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- MKE Sports & Entertainment on Tuesday, May 27th announced the six-time champion Milwaukee Wave professional soccer team has named a new coaching staff!

Veteran players Giuliano Oliviero and Nick Vorberg have been named new coaches of the Wave.

Oliviero will serve as head coach, and Vorberg will serve as assistant coach.

"This is a very thrilling and proud day for my family and I, and I look forward to the challenge of coaching a team as talented as the Milwaukee Wave,” said Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. “I have been fortunate enough to be part of three Wave championship teams, and my immediate goal as Head Coach is bringing another title to this storied franchise.I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Zimmerman, Sue Black, and the rest of the Wave organization for showing confidence in me as we help lead the Wave into the MASL and a new era of indoor soccer in Milwaukee.”

As a member of the Wave for the past 10 years, we are truly in great hands!”

Major Arena Soccer League play is slated to begin late October of 2014 with 24-teams from across the United States and Mexico.

A 2014-15 schedule will be announced in September along with a playoff format.

MKE Wave home games will still be played at U.S. Cellular Arena.

MKE Wave Summer Soccer Camp registration continues with over 30 camps in 25 locations.

HEAD COACH GIULIANO OLIVIERO BIO:

Giuliano Oliviero



Giuliano Oliviero from Vancover, British Columbia has had an illustrious career in North America, playing with the Canadian National, Olympic, Beach Soccer and Futsal teams along with eight outdoor and four indoor teams since debuting professionally in 1990.

Oliviero first joined the Milwaukee Wave in 1995, where he was runner up for Rookie of the Year, left the team in 1997, and rejoined in 2003. Since then the Assistant Player/Coach helped earn 3 Milwaukee Wave Championships, is Director of Coaching for SC Waukesha and MKE Wave Summer Soccer Camps.

Giuliano resides in Menomonee Falls, WI with his wife Tracy and children Xavier & Capri. 

ASSISTANT COACH NICK VORBERG BIO:

Nick Vorberg



Nick Vorberg has been a fixture between the posts for the MKE Wave for over a decade. The four-time all-star garnered goalkeeper of the year following the 2009-10 and 2012-13 seasons and ranks second on the Wave's all-time list in wins.

In June 2013, Vorberg played with the U.S. Futsal national team at the Four Nations Tournament in Newcastle, England, where the U.S. team won all three of its matches.

In addition to stops with the San Diego Sockers, Utah Freezz and the Portland Pythons, Vorberg has also been a member of the U.S. men's national futsal team, which included appearances at the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup and CONCACAF Championships, as well as the 2007 Pan American Games. His outdoor playing experience includes stints with the Cascade Surge (1997-99) of the USISL Pro League, former USL Premiere Development League side Lafayette Lightning (2001) and the Milwaukee Wave United (2004-06).

Vorberg, who holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" license in coaching, also serves as the academy director at SC Waukesha and MKE Wave Summer Soccer Camps. Vorberg also joined the Marquette University men's soccer coaching staff in July 2012, training and mentoring the MU goalkeepers in addition to camp instruction.
