15 cats, kittens removed from home discovered stolen

LA CROSSE (AP) — Police suspect a woman whose cats were removed from her home by animal control officers was the person who broke into the Coulee Region Humane Society and stole them.

Investigators say 15 cats and kittens were taken, apparently by someone who shattered a window at the humane society last weekend. Eight of the cats taken belonged to the woman, while the others looked similar to her animals.

Rescuers acting on an anonymous tip recovered 12 of the cats in a field in Holmen, near where the woman was arrested. Authorities seized the animals May 2 from the woman's apartment where they had been living in squalor.
