Proclaimed: Wednesday is UW-Whitewater Warhawks Day

MADISON (WITI) -- Gov. Scott Walker proclaimed Wednesday, May 28th UW–Whitewater Warhawks Day in celebration of the Warhawks baseball victory against Emory University; the NCAA baseball championship completes a triple crown of NCAA championships during the school year in football, basketball, and baseball – a first in NCAA history.

“The discipline and dedication the Warhawk athletes have demonstrated throughout the year in their respective sports as well as their academic studies is commendable,” Governor Walker said.  “The unprecedented three-sport sweep in Division III national championships is a testament to the passion these athletes and their coaches have for the game.  Wisconsin is home to incredibly talented athletes, and today, we celebrate the Warhawks’ impressive accomplishment.”

The three-sport sweep of men’s Division III national championships began on December 20, 2013, when the UW–Whitewater football team beat the University of Mount Union Purple Riders, 52-14, in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.  The UW–Whitewater men’s basketball team next defeated Williams College with a final score of 75-73 on March 22, 2014.  Finally, the historic sweep culminated on May 27, 2014 with the UW–Whitewater baseball team defeating Emory University 7-0 in the NCAA World Series, thus securing the third and final national championship for the UW–Whitewater Warhawks.
