"We take the World Cup pretty seriously:" But some taking issue with display at Nomad

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A celebration of Brazil...or an offensive display? An East Side bar has transformed its outdoor space for the World Cup. It is meant to look like the slums of Brazil -- and it is drawing controversy.

The word "favela" is painted on the door outside the Nomad World Pub.

It's a term for a Brazilian slum, and the bar has been drawing controversy because of it.

"We take the World Cup pretty seriously," Nomad's owner, Michael Eitel said.

At Nomad World Pub on Brady Street, a celebration is in the works.

"This is our fourth World Cup and we always do sort of an homage to the hosting country," Eitel said.

The bar has transformed an adjacent parking lot to look like a Brazilian favela -- or slum.

"It just seemed like a natural thing," Eitel said.

Bright colors cover the walls, lights line the bar and clothes hang overhead.

"We kind of just did it as a celebration of the spirit and culture of Brazil," Eitel said.

The setting has drawn backlash.

"An outdoor patio to watch the World Cup is fine, but this is something else and it's not okay," Ryan Findley said.

People on Twitter, Facebook and various blogs are criticizing the decision.

"I feel very strongly that the literal living conditions of other people are not them parks for us to play in at all," Findley said.
