Annual Summerfest Rock-N-Sole race brings nearly 9,000 runners to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's a little bit of rock, and a whole lot of running! The Annual Summerfest Rock-N-Sole run has hundreds hanging out on Harbor Drive Saturday morning, June 14th.

From those who are trying, to those who are triathletes.

"I`m just really trying to get healthy, so this is the first event I thought I should try," said

All are welcome, during the 4th Annual Summerfest Rock-N-Sole run.

"We couldn`t be more excited because this is the kick-off to the start of Summerfest," said John Boler, Summerfest chief marking officer.

Boler explains that nearly 9,000 runners have to come Milwaukee from 41 states, and at least four countries, to rock their soles through either a 5k, quarter, or half marathon this year.

"The execution has been spectacular. The runners are in great spirits. We`ve got great cooperation from the weatherman, and everything is going good," said Boler.

While nearly 9,000 pedestrians prepare to push themselves through the finish line, they're keeping company with some shorter-striders.

"Summerfest is, continues to be a family event, and we thought, with the Summerfest Rock-N-Sole, what a great addition it is to get the kids involved," said Lynda Kohler, Sharp Literacy.

So, for the first time, this year's Rock-N-Sole partners with Sharp Literacy to include the Run to Read for Children, six to 12-years-old.

"I`m excited! I`ve ran miles, before," said Colin.

But this time, Colin is doing it with all the appropriate accouterments, including a t-shirt, bib, and a medal when crossing the finish line.

"If we can start them, not only to learn to read early, but learn to exercise, and, you know, a healthy body promotes a healthy mind," said Kohler.

And both produce healthy communities. This year's race featured 900 volunteers, including dozens from The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, which is the event's charitable partner.
