"It's really refreshing:" MPS Acting Superintendent back in the classroom

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Just one day after being officially sworn in, the Milwaukee Public School Interim Superintendent is making the rounds.

Greenfield bilingual school was one of three schools MPS Acting Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver visited Wednesday morning.

"It’s really refreshing. My favorite job was being a teacher, so to be able to start off at the beginning of my tenure going to a school reminds us of what's really important,” said Driver.

She listened in on a few classes, and talked with a few students, learning about this year’s "summer academy" - a 5 week program that gives students a preview of what they'll be learning next year. But Driver says these visits also helps her look ahead to fall.

“My main focus this year is focusing on the common core state standards. They`ve been around now for 5 years, we`ve been focusing on our instructional shifts but now it`s really moving toward what`s happening in the classroom,” said Driver.

When asked if she'd like the position on a permanent basis, she said that right now, she's just focusing on this year.
