Busy holiday weekend: Red Cross called out to assist with three fires in a 13-hour period

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- Fire officials were called out to a house fire in West Allis on Saturday, July 5th -- and this was the third fire the American Red Cross of Southeastern Wisconsin was called out to assist with in just a 13-hour period.

The first fire broke out at a home in the 5800 block of W. Helena Street.

The Red Cross says misguided fireworks caused this fire.

Red Cross officials were assisting five people following the fire -- including an infant.

The second fire occurred at a home in the 2700 block of N. Grant Boulevard in Milwaukee.

Fire officials say it caused half a million dollars worth of damage.

The Red Cross says no one was home at the time of the fire.

The third fire occurred on Saturday afternoon in West Allis.

The fire broke out in the 1400 block of S. 89th Street.

This was the Red Cross' third fire response in 13 hours.

Red Cross spokeswoman Barbara Behling tells FOX6 News three requests to help fire victims would be heavy on a normal weekend -- but not on an Independence Day holiday weekend.
