DNR: Storm-damaged trees could be of value

DODGEVILLE (AP) — State officials are reminding landowners in southwestern Wisconsin to be wary as they clean up storm-damaged trees.

A report says fallen timber can be worth money, so landowners should be fully informed before hiring someone to haul it away.

Tornadoes touched down in several locations across Grant and Iowa counties last week. The state Department of Natural Resources says tree damage was recorded across a 23-mile-long line covering about 3,200 acres.

DNR officials say landowners who are having the damage cleaned up should factor in the value of downed timber. The DNR says landowners should call a DNR forester or approved private consulting forester before signing an agreement with a contractor.

DNR spokesman Aaron Young says the timber should remain marketable for about a year.
