"It's going to make a world of difference:" Hundreds take part in "Day of Action"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Volunteering is something that Katie Cavallero loves to do. So when she was asked to participate in United Way of Greater Milwaukee's Intern Day of Action, she couldn't pass it up.

"I`m so happy that I have the opportunity to impact these people`s lives through simple actions that I have taken for granted in my everyday life," said Cavallero.

Cavallero is one of 550 college interns from 17 companies volunteering at several different organizations.

She spent the day building flower beds at Curative Care Network.

"It`s going to make a world of difference. I think it`s going to be a great improvement and a great addition to the organization," said Curative Care Network Horticultural Coordinator Kelly Cunningham.

Curative Care Network is a nonprofit that provides services to people with disabilities.

They plan to use the flower beds for horticulture therapy.

"Horticulture therapy is used to work on vocational skills, cognitive skills, social skills, and physical rehabilitation," said Cunningham.

This form of therapy can help develop fine and gross motor skills by using the gardening tools, along with building self-esteem.

"You see an increase in their social skills and how they interact with their peers or their family members," said Cunningham.

As the volunteers saw the smiles they helped create, they could feel the impact a little kindness can make.
