"One vacant lot at a time:" Breaking ground on urban garden in Harambee neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Victory Garden Initiative broke ground on Monday, July 14th on a new orchard in the Harambee neighborhood.

The goal is to provide the community with sustainable food sources.

The orchard is called the "People's Orchard" and is one of five urban gardens given to the community by the Victory Garden Initiative.

The goal is to empower communities to grow their own food and build the local urban agriculture movement.

"This is how you change neighborhoods, one vacant lot at a time. With partners who are committed to each other and committed to the City of Milwaukee," Mayor Barrett said.

City leaders continue to work with the Victory Garden Initiative to set up even more urban gardens.
