“One day you're with somebody, one day you're not:" Man gunned down outside restaurant

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a homicide that happened in the 2600 block of W. Fond du Lac Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22nd.

According to police, 30-year-old Jimmy Nash was shot while standing outside of a restaurant during circumstances that remain under investigation.

Nash died at the scene.

Nash's family members and friends are in shock and disbelief after hearing their loved one was gunned down.

“I just can’t believe it you know,” said one of Nash’s friends, Dedric Stringer.

They are remembering him as a good father, and a talented artist. They said he was a local rapper, often performing around town.

“Always had a smile on his face; loved the music,” said his cousin Jerome Caldwell.

“He was trying to do something with himself. He was a father. He has a little daughter. We`ve been working together trying to get ourselves together,” said Stringer.

Police say Nash was outside Fryerz restaurant on the corner of 27th and Fond Du Lac when he was shot.

“I mean, we heard about it but it’s still not real to me,” said Stringer.

Stringer and two other friends had to go to the scene to see for themselves. They were not there Tuesday night during the shooting, but one woman, who didn’t want to be identified, was there with her boyfriend.

“As soon as I backed away from the door, that's when I heard the five or six shots. He ran in and was holding his left side and that's when he said 'I was shot.' He bumped into the chair, the gumball machine and he went down," the woman said.

The woman says her boyfriend started CPR as she sat next to him.

“I was holding his hand saying 'stay with us. Stay with us,'" the woman said.

Nash was pronounced dead at the scene.

“People are just losing their lives for nothing. How are you just going to lose your life just going to get something to eat?” said Caldwell.

The shock is now turning to frustration for Nash’s family and friends as they struggle to make sense of a senseless crime.

“One day you're with somebody, one day you're not. That`s got to be like the worst feeling ever,” said Stringer.

Police are still searching for motive and no arrests have been made.

The family is requesting any assistance they can receive from the community.
