RACINE (WITI) -- A tragic accident in Racine on Saturday afternoon, July 26th. A teenager behind the wheel, and a five-year-old standing in the driveway. The five-year-old girl is dead, and police say a 16-year-old Racine boy is responsible.

It happened shortly before 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

Racine police say a five-year-old Kenosha girl was struck by a van backing out of a driveway on First Ave. That child later died from her injuries.

Officials say the girl had just arrived to attend a party in the neighborhood.

Officers were told the child was standing at the end of a driveway facing the street when officials say a 16-year-old Racine boy began backing his family’s van out of the driveway. The five-year-old was struck by the passenger side corner of the van and knocked to the ground. Officials say she was then run over by the passenger side rear wheel.

The driver apparently told officers he did not know that he had struck anything -- but heard people yelling and shouting. At this point, the driver pulled the van forward in the driveway. The child was run over a second time.

The five-year-old was conscious when officers and rescue arrived. The victim was transported to Wheaton Franciscan Emergency Room for treatment -- where she later died from her injuries.

Officials say all indications are that this was a tragic accident and the steep pitch of the driveway contributed to the driver not being able to see the child.

The five-year-old girl is identified as Naomi Guerrero. Her family is inconsolable after what happened to her.

"My baby was smart, full of life. Going into kindergarten to grammar school," Naomi's mother, Esmeralda Guerrero told FOX6 News.

Ashley Johnson witnessed the incident.

"As we`re screaming, he`s hitting her and then we`re screaming and crying telling him to stop. And he paused for a second and then all of a sudden he put it in drive and zoomed up the driveway and you just see him dragging her," Johnson said.

"At this time, we believe it to be just a tragic accident. The 16-year-old wasn`t able to see the child where she was, and we just feel horrible for the family," Racine Police Sgt. Jessie Metoyer said.

That's an explanation the child's family is unwilling to accept.

"He punched it with my baby all the way up his driveway. This is not an accident," the child's mother, Esmeralda Guerrero said.

It was a tragic accident and for one it’s not like the teenager meant to hit this child. I agree where were the parents or a responsible adult that should have been watching that child to begin with? MAYBE IF PARENTS were to pay more attention to their smaller children around vehicles things like this won’t happen, sorry to say but it’s true.

MAYBE IF PARENTS were to pay more attention to their smaller children around vehicles

a mistake happened and unless you expect parents to leash their children, i doubt much could have been done about it. I hate to speculate as to what exactly happened, but the only thing that should have happened is that the 16 year old should have made sure children were not around the vehicle when he intended to move it.

I hate seeing some of the stuff people are saying. I was there and i know what happened i saw the whole thing. And for people to be on here saying her parent should have payed more attention is rude and disrespectful because Naomi did what she was told and stood on the sidewalk she wasn’t directly in there driveway she was off to the side while her parent was getting things out of the car. They had no reason to worry that she was in harms way. So talk what you know cause none of you were there to know what really happened this wasn’t a case of her parent not paying attention! Smh some people just have no compassion or respect for others!

If he was 16 shouldn’t there have been an adult with a drivers license with him. This is just so sad. My thoughts and prayers with both families.

I have seen this on Facebook since the day it happened and my heart goes out to this innocent precious child and her family. I can’t imagine the pain they are feeling. Losing a loved one is awful but when it’s a child there are no words to explain the pain. The comments about “Where was a responsible adult” and “Maybe if parents were to pay more attention” are insensitive and cruel! The family is grieving the loss of their child and to hear something like this from a person who wasn’t even there to know what actually happened is just rude and inconsiderate. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and think about how that would make you feel. The only thing that should be commented on here are condolences. Anything can happen at any time. In the blink of an eye a life can be taken just as it was on Saturday. Sleep with the angels sweet child.

I totally agree. No need to make harsh remarks. This is a tragic accident regardless of the circumstances

May God and the Lord Jesus comfort you in your loss. She is in heaven! Jesus said, “suffer the little children to come onto me and forbid them not.” God is love.
