Make your voice heard: Early voting underway ahead of August primary election

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- In-person absentee voting is underway in the August 12th primary election. Early voting began on Monday, July 28th.

New rules for early voting restrict voting hours to 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (or close of business -- whichever is later) Monday through Friday -- and eliminate weekend early voting.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has said the new voting laws do more to fix election outcomes than to fix Wisconsin's problems.

Voting organizers in Milwaukee say it could cause problems on Election Day.

"I don't doubt it is going to cause some lines for us, and it could be discouraging -- at least to some voters," Neil Albrecht, Milwaukee Election Commission's Executive Director said.

Supporters of the new rules say the restrictions remove an unfair advantage that larger cities had -- keeping polls open because they had more money to do so.

Early voting continues through August 8th.
