Unimaginable grief: Family members, friends of five-year-old girl struck by van hold vigil in her honor

RACINE/KENOSHA (WITI) -- Family members and friends of five-year-old Naomi Guerrero held a vigil in her honor on Tuesday evening. They were too shaken up to go to the scene where Guerrero died, so they held the vigil near the little girl's Kenosha home.

The five-year-old girl was killed on Saturday afternoon, July 26th -- when she was run over in a driveway in Racine.

It happened shortly before 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Guerrero was struck by a van backing out of a driveway on First Avenue. She later died as a result of her injuries.

Officials say the girl had just arrived to attend a party in the neighborhood.

Officers were told the child was standing at the end of a driveway facing the street when officials say a 16-year-old Racine boy began backing his family’s van out of the driveway. The five-year-old was struck by the passenger side corner of the van and knocked to the ground. Officials say she was then run over by the passenger side rear wheel.

The driver apparently told officers he did not know that he had struck anything -- but heard people yelling and shouting. At this point, the driver pulled the van forward in the driveway. The child was run over a second time.

The five-year-old was conscious when officers and rescue arrived. The victim was transported to Wheaton Franciscan Emergency Room for treatment -- where she later died from her injuries.

Officials say all indications are that this was a tragic accident and the steep pitch of the driveway contributed to the driver not being able to see the child.

The five-year-old girl is identified as Naomi Guerrero. Her family is inconsolable after what happened to her.

"My baby was smart, full of life. Going into kindergarten to grammar school," Naomi's mother, Esmeralda Guerrero told FOX6 News.

Ashley Johnson witnessed the incident.

"As we`re screaming, he`s hitting her and then we`re screaming and crying telling him to stop. And he paused for a second and then all of a sudden he put it in drive and zoomed up the driveway and you just see him dragging her," Johnson said.

"At this time, we believe it to be just a tragic accident. The 16-year-old wasn`t able to see the child where she was, and we just feel horrible for the family," Racine Police Sgt. Jessie Metoyer said.

That's an explanation the child's family is unwilling to accept.

"He punched it with my baby all the way up his driveway. This is not an accident," the child's mother, Esmeralda Guerrero said.

Naomi Guerrero's aunt says the little girl wasn't the only one struck on Saturday.

"He not only hit her, he also dragged me and my sister with her -- trying to get back up the driveway. I was dragged -- holding her, trying to pull her out. How do you not feel three bodies underneath your van?" Mary Marquez said.

Naomi Guerrero's family members tell FOX6 News they are considering a lawsuit against the driver who hit her.

FOX6 News knocked on his door on Tuesday evening -- but no one was home for comment on this story.
