"Very concerning for me:" Gov. Walker speaks about threats made to his son via Twitter

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Gov. Scott Walker's son has been the target of a number of disturbing threats. Now, for the first time, the governor is talking about those threats with FOX6 News.

Robert Peffer

31-year-old Robert Peffer has been charged with four misdemeanors for threatening Matt Walker.

Peffer, who signed the Scott Walker recall petition, allegedly sent 36 separate Twitter messages that included sexually aggressive language, racial slurs and even promises of physical activity.

"Obviously, any time someone in your family deals with something like this -- as we've talked about before -- I'm pretty calm. I asked for the job. My family doesn't, so that was obviously very concerning for me," said Gov. Walker on Tuesday, August 19th.

Matt Walker is a 20-year-old student at Marquette University -- where he serves as head of the Wisconsin Federation of College Republicans.

"To Matt's credit he actually brought it up to law enforcement.  Didn't make a big deal out of it.  Let them know about it," said Gov. Walker. "They tracked it, saw that it wasn't just a random thing, that it was done repeatedly, and I think the process will work itself out."

The threats were condemned by Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke.

"No one should deserve that. It's absolutely dead wrong," said Burke.

The governor received death threats during the uproar over Act 10. But he believes the once-heated political climate has cooled since the end of the recall election.

"I hope it's an anomaly. I think things have calmed down, that people can have disagreements by-and-large without resorting to the kind of threats we saw in the past. So I hope this is the exception, not the rule going forward," said Gov. Walker.

Peffer has previously been investigated for threatening the president. He will appear in court on Monday.

The Walker family has had increase security ever since 2011.
