Fraternity suspended: Several sickened after drinking at Tau Kappa Epsilon party

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A fraternity tied to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is suspended -- and its house president now faces criminal charges. All of this takes place after a weekend party at the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) frat house made several people sick -- possibly from a date rape drug put into drinks.

Shortly after midnight, police started getting calls. First one incoherent and incapacitated young woman at the Sandburg Halls dorm, then another and another. A fourth victim at Sandburg -- violently ill was a young man. Later, there was another young woman who could not even walk. All were taken to the hospital -- and all had something in common. They had been at a TKE party earlier in the night drinking.

A search warrant affidavit says at the TKE party that night, female guests could purchase an $8 card that got them drinks and a special drink. To get into the party, you needed to know a special knock. When officers got to the party, there were 42 people in the basement -- all under age 21.

During the investigation, one student told police he heard TKE members were known to drug people at parties in the past. Police obtained a report from Shorewood police in which three sexual assaults were reported connected to TKE members in April.

No one answered the door at the TKE house on Friday.
