On the first day of fall, the colors are starting to show in Wisconsin!

DANE COUNTY (WITI) -- If you haven't gotten a dose of it yet -- get ready for some orange! Tuesday, September 23rd marked the official first day of fall, and already across Wisconsin, the fall colors are starting to show!

The gourd patch at Kalscheuer's Farm's pumpkin patch was busy on this first day of fall.

"We're open on the weekend now from here to the end of October, and during the week from noon until 6:30. Get to pick a pumpkin and just spend family time," Doug Kalscheuer said.

There are plenty of pumpkins to choose from.

The leaves are starting to fall in Dane County, but there's still a lot of green. We're at about 50% for color change, but by this time next week -- there could be twice as much color showing.

"We'll see a lot of yellows. Some of the oaks will be brilliant red. The fancy name is the Anthocyanins -- which again, is a pigment for the purples, the reds," forest health specialist Mark Guthmiller said.

What Guthmiller means is we'll get really red and crisp yellows if the temperature cooperates.

"Some of the best would be cool conditions with bright sunlight," Guthmiller said.
