Police: 50-year-old Milwaukee woman shot, killed near 60th & Roosevelt

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a homicide that occurred late Thursday night, October 2nd.

It happened near 60th and Roosevelt just before midnight.

Police say they believe the victim was confronted and shot during a robbery attempt in front of a residence after parking her vehicle.

The victim, a 50-year-old woman from Milwaukee, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She has been identified as Carla Nichols.

"I saw the flashers going on and I happened to get up and look outside and noticed there was police tape blocking off the whole entire block," said neighbor, Christopher Novotny.

Novotny says, prior to this shooting, the worst incident he'd seen in the neighborhood was a car accident.

"The people that live here are typically middle-aged or retired. There's not a lot of crime. We watch out for each other, in the alley and everywhere. This is the first of anything like this that's happened in this neighborhood," said Novotny.

Another neighbor worries the shooting could hurt her in-home daycare.

"Parents come pick up their kids at midnight. I have two parents that come that late to pick up their kids so it raises a big red flag to me so what do I tell my parents, or how do I deal with it like that?" said neighbor, Lazarica Ashley.

People who never gave it much thought before, are now looking at ways to protect themselves.

"I have a right to concealed carry, but I don't always carry and it just makes me on alert to want to carry all the time," said Ashley.

"Well, I'm gonna go look into getting some extra security lights, perhaps put them up in the garage and back alley and I am today going to apply for a conceal and carry because of this," said Novotny.

Police do not have anyone in custody.
