Promoting peace and hope: South side church hosts special mass to denounce violence

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Peace is now the priority for a church on Milwaukee's south side.

On Sunday, October 5th, St. Patrick's Parish held a special mass to spread hope.

Father Jose Moreno says he's been a pastor at the church for 14 years, and it has gotten so violent, some children are afraid to go to school.

On Sunday, those children were part of the ceremony -- singing and waving white flags to symbolize peace.

Father Moreno says he hopes the message will extend far beyond the church pews.

"When I was outside saying goodbye to people, one of the women who came to church told me 'Padre, today I really understand. I am going to commit myself to peace,'" Father Moreno said.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Alderman Jose Perez were the guests of honor during Sunday's event.

Father Moreno says it's important for his parishioners to meet and interact with those who represent them in government.
