Serious crash in Racine: Car hits pole, crashes into garage, then catches fire; two injured

RACINE (WITI) -- Two people were taken to the hospital after a serious crash in Racine.

It happened early Friday morning, October 10th on the Main Street Bridge in Racine.

According to authorities, officers observed a vehicle traveling southbound on N. Main Street near Dodge Street at a high rate of speed around 3:25 a.m.

When officers went to investigate, they found that the driver had lost control over the bridge and struck a pole. The vehicle then crash into the basement of 134 Main St. The vehicle penetrated the building, rolled and came to rest on its roof.

The vehicle then caught on fire with the driver trapped inside. The passenger, a 45 year old Racine woman, was found trapped underneath the vehicle.

Patrol officers rushed to the scene and began extinguishing the flames and providing first aid to the victims.

The Fire Department arrived and took over rescue operations.

Both parties were transported to Wheaton Franciscan Medical Center for treatment.

Several officers suffered smoke inhalation injuries but remained on duty.

The driver of the vehicle was later transported to Froedtert Hospital for further treatment. Both parties suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
