Energy bill savings: Tips from the Weatherization Fair

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- After two straight nights of "frost advisory's" -- it might be a sign it is time to get ready for winter.

Even if you aren't ready, organizers on Saturday want to make sure your home is.

That was the purpose behind the 4th annual Weatherization Fair in Milwaukee.

The event took place Saturday morning at the Journey House. It included tips and workshops for keeping those energy bills down. That includes shaking up a common misconception about weatherization.

"When we think about weatherization, we just think about the windows and the air leakage, but if the homes, especially in the city of Milwaukee, 92% of homes are very old so there's a lot of air leakage and a lot of the times they don't have any type of insulation," said Ofelia Mondragon, Social Development Commission Program Manager.

Organizers say that insulation really is one the keys to maintaining low energy costs. It can make a bigger difference than energy efficient windows.

Organizers say they plan to have more of these weatherization fairs in the future.
