The gardening season coming to an end -- what can you do to improve your soil for next year?

With the gardening season coming to an end, we have removed all the plants that are finished providing produce. Now is the time to add our compost to improve our soil for next year. It can be worked into the soil with a garden fork or shovel. Or we can use slightly higher tech tools like a broadfork or a tiller.

Not all vegetables are done for the season. What can be left despite the onset of cold weather includes some root crops, the cole crops and even lettuce. We'll talk about how long they will last and show what we can do to keep them going as long as possible.

Blueberries, strawberries and a few perennial flowers are slightly tender and appreciate some winter protection to make it through the winter. We will show what to do and talk about when to do it.
