Tree felled by group of Boy Scouts falls to the ground, kills motorcyclist

UTAH (WITI) -- The tree was felled by a group of Boy Scouts in Utah, and on Saturday, October 11th, a man from Colorado driving a motorcycle was killed when that tree fell to the ground.

FOX6's sister station, FOX13 in Salt Lake City says police are calling the incident a case of unfortunate timing.

Utah's Department of Public Safety says the 69-year-old motorcyclist had no time to react.

The motorcyclist was headed north when he crashed into the falling aspen tree. The tree had been felled by a group of Boy Scouts with a permit for cutting down trees for firewood -- according to FOX13.

Utah's Department of Public Safety says two boys stepped away from the main group that was cutting down trees -- and they felled the tree that eventually killed the motorcyclist.

FOX13 reports the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. A doctor who was with the Boy Scouts pronounced the man dead at the scene.

It is unclear whether any charges will be filed in the case.

Utah's Department of Public Safety says it appears this was just a tragic accident.
