(CNN) — The Kansas City Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on Wednesday, October 15th to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1985, when they defeated St. Louis 4 games to 3.

The Royals swept the Orioles 4 games to 0 in the American League Championship Series and are the first Major League Baseball team to ever win its first eight games of a single postseason.

The Cardinals are battling the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series, which the Giants lead 2 games to 1. The teams will play Game 4 on Wednesday night at San Francisco.
