EAU CLAIRE (AP) — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says President Barack Obama made a mistake in pulling troops from Iraq that let Islamic State fighters gain control in Iraq and Syria.

Johnson told the Leader-Telegram of Eau Claire that ISIS is a bigger threat now, with better equipment, organization and support.

He says the solution is for the United States to declare war and send American troops back to the Middle East to fight ISIS.

Johnson says the airstrikes the U.S. is already undertaking won’t be enough.

Why? So we can finally have the war in Syria over oil that we’ve been meaning to have for the last decade or so? Don’t you realize all this is, is a pathetic use of military power simply to control the flow of oil? At some point we have to stop exporting pointless war to the rest of the world and let these countries deal with their own problems. We are falling apart internally and all anyone can think about is trying to control more outside of our own borders. Stop.
