A steady stream of voters in Milwaukee as the countdown continues to cast a ballot

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's the final push to the polls. Sandburg Hall has been one of the busiest polling places in the city. Sites around college and university campuses are seeing an increase in the number of folks trying to register. But when it comes to lines, nothing exceeded a 20-minute wait.

The city of Milwaukee has been prepared to handle a steady stream of voters.

"All of the city's 193 voting sites opened on time this morning by 7 a.m. and staffed by over 2,100 election workers," said Neil Albrecht, election commissioner.

Albrecht says although it's still too early to have solid numbers he expects a 70% turnout in the city. He also used early voting as a way to gauge what to expect this election day.

"For early voting in Milwaukee we saw 15,000 voters, that was twice as many that we'd seen in November 2010 for the last gubernatorial election and it was a 33% increase over what we saw for the June 2012 recall election," said Albrecht.

The traffic is noticeable, and it's attributed to the candidates and the legwork they've done.

"Any time candidate are campaigning, it increases public awareness of the election," said Albrecht.

So far there have only been a few hiccups like at the Zeidler Municipal Building and Webster Middle School, where some machines jammed -- but the problem was quickly fixed.

The issue caused no more than a 15 minute delay. It's been busy but workers are efficient and lines are moving quickly. If voters want to be part of the process, a few moments extra are worth it.

Things will continue to be busy as another peak time is when folks are getting off work and done with their day. But as long as you are in line at your polling location when it closes at 8 p.m., you will still be able to vote.

In Waukesha County, poll workers saw a consistent flow of voters at Waukesha's City Hall throughout the day Tuesday. Many voters said they were pleasantly surprised by how quickly they were able to make their way through the line.

"Fantastic! Quick and easy -- in and out," Steven Brittain said.

"They got me up, I got the ballot. The ballots were easy to read this year for a change and the whole thing took probably five minutes," David Hinricher said.
