Marking a somber anniversary: Folks gather in Milwaukee to remember Kristallnacht

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- People gathered in Milwaukee on Sunday, November 9th to mark a somber anniversary.

Sunday marked the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, which involved a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria on November 9th through the 10th in 1938.

Kristallnacht, or Crystal Night is a reference to the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues had their windows smashed.

People gathered at the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center to remember those lost.

"Would like to be all united and make sure that we have a society here and a civilization founded on the prinicples of dignity, respect and tolerance," Executive Director Dr. Shay Pilnik said.

Kristallnacht was a pivotal event in history that eventually led to the Holocaust.
