"A heart-melting moment!" Four-year-old girl wakes up from medically-induced coma after shooting

RACINE (WITI) -- Four-year-old Ja'Nyela Marsh-Highshaw, the four-year-old girl who was shot in the head while sitting in a car near 18th and Villa in Racine is now awake, and is responding with hand gestures to doctor's questions. That's according to the little girl's mother.

Ja'Nyela was shot on November 5th -- and 13 days later, her mother says the little girl is awake and doing better. Janikka Marsh says on Tuesday, November 18th, doctors took out the tubes that were helping the little girl breathe -- so she is now breathing on her own.

Ja'Nyela's mother says her progress is simply a miracle.

"She is doing great. She has all her tubes out, so she is breathing on her own. She is doing 'I love you' in sign language," Janikka Marsh said.

The little girl was in a medically-induced coma for nearly 11 days.

"Her eyes were just looking at me, really big and she was crying. It was a heart-melting moment," Janikka Marsh said.

Her mom Janikka says even when the tubes and machines were breathing for her daughter, she never lost faith the little girl would wake up.

"I'm just amazed. It's only been 13 days and we`ve got nothing but great signs from her," Janikka Marsh said.

Janikka says there's still a long road ahead as Ja'Nyela continues to recover.

"It`s our faith. My faith, her faith in God is what I believe is what`s keeping me and her strong," Janikka Marsh said.

No one is in custody in connection with this shooting.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible in this case.
