Furnace repair shops busy as the bitter cold hits southeastern Wisconsin early

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It happens every time we get our first blast of bitterly cold weather. Furnace repair shops get busy!

Matthew Brown is a furnace technician with Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning in Waukesha County.

"I just like the independence. I like working with my hands. I take pride in what I do," Brown said.

Brown has been doing this full-time since completing training at Waukesha County Technical College.

With wind chills in the single-digits early this week, technicians with Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning were set to make five or more stops per day. In fact, Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning has people on call around the clock.

This, as our furnaces work hard to pump warm air into our homes.

Brown says he knew the bitter cold would show up -- but he didn't expect it quite this early.

"Very surprised, but then again from last winter, it's hard to say what to expect," Brown said.

Brown says he advises homeowners to be sure to schedule regular maintenance on your furnace to avoid costly problems. Brown also advises gradually increasing how many hours you run the furnace as it gets colder.

If your blower is making a weird noise, or you notice a funny smell, it's probably time to have your furnace looked at.
