"This is what we do:" Red Cross, which helps others, needs YOUR help after fires every day this week

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The American Red Cross helps those affected by fires, and this week -- they've been busy!

First, a fire at a 28-unit apartment complex in Franklin on Monday, December 1st that left seven families displaced. The Red Cross also assisted folks following a fire at a single-family home on 36th Street on Monday.

Then, an apartment fire Tuesday night, December 2nd at an apartment on W. Eggert Place. Three firefighters were injured fighting that blaze.

Then, Wednesday, December 3rd a fire at a hotel near Appleton Avenue and Keefe -- followed by a fire Wednesday night. Red Cross volunteers were called out to assist after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment on Lovers Lane in Milwaukee.

The Red Cross tells FOX6 News it is assisting dozens of people, and that's put a financial strain on the organization.

For American Red Cross volunteers, there's no disaster that's too big.

"We have to be ready for every age. This is what we do," Patty Flowers with the Red Cross of Southeastern Wisconsin said.

Lately, there's been some strain on the organization that's used to helping others.

"It`s been an incredible week. We`ve just had fires every single day. My volunteers are tired. The resources are stretched," Flowers said.

Red Cross officials say each fire they're called out to costs them more than $2,000.

"We`re just entering our busiest season for fires. We've already been so busy that -- yes, I'm worried," Flowers said.

The Red Cross had a deficit of more than $50,000 in 2013.

"I`ll tell you right now, if it continues the way it is now, we could be in the same boat as last year," Flowers said.

The Red Cross is asking for your help in their time of need.

"I rely on the American public to give us donations for all of these services. No matter what, we`re going to provide the services," Flowers said.
