Judge sentences Tedric Sanders to seven years in prison in Fox Point shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee County judge sentenced Tedric Sanders on Tuesday, December 16th to seven years in prison and another seven-and-a-half years of extended supervision.

20-year-old Sanders is the man police say tried to rob Innovative Optique in Fox Point. That robbery ended with a man dead -- Sanders' accomplice, 22-year-old Joshua Drake.

Police say a store employee exchanged shots with Drake -- and Drake died at the scene. More than two dozen shots were fired.

Under Wisconsin law, those "involved" in felonies can be charged if someone died while the crime was committed. Sanders was originally charged with felony murder and felony bail jumping. But he reached a plea deal. Instead, Sanders pleaded guilty to an amended armed robbery charge.

In court on Tuesday, Sanders told the judge he wants to be a better man.

"I want to appear to be a better father and a son when I return from prison I want the court and my family to understand I will and I need to change," said Sanders.

The judge told Sanders his criminal record to this point is a concern to the community. Sanders has a history of criminal damage to property and auto theft. The business he targeted is now closed.
