(CNN) — Police shot and killed a man who was firing a gun in a Texas City, Texas parking lot early Friday morning, December 26th.

Police were called to a disturbance outside a lounge at Crockett Street.

A man was reportedly firing shots and when officers arrived, he turned toward them.

Police opened fire — killing the man.

After the shooting, police said a crowd gathered and started throwing rocks at the officers.

Other nearby agencies responded to provide backup.

“We do feel that the individual who is deceased did have the handgun in his possession when he was fired upon by the officers,” Texas City Police Captaion Joe Stanton said.

“At this time it’s being investigated by the sheriff’s office. There’s a lot of things, a lot of facts and innuendoes and hearsays that we’re looking into. And we will be able to get all of that. And this is going to be a thorough and a very methodical investigation. We’re trying to do the very best we can to ensure transparency and that’s why I asked sheriff to process that when his agency investigates this shooting,” Texas City Police Chief Robert Burby said.
