"It's actually saving us:" Declining gas prices help boost some businesses

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Because of a record breaking streak in gas prices, some local businesses are no longer breaking the bank. Costs have been steadily declining for the last 90 days.

Loaded up and on the move, Fred Mitchell does his fair share of driving.

"Sometimes we go as far as Mequon, or down to Racine, we go out west to Brookfield," said Mitchell.

Mitchell delivers for Taken 2 The Cleaners, a valet dry cleaning and laundry service based out of downtown Milwuakee.

"Business has been good lately," said Ryan Murray.

Co-owner, Ryan Murray, says his business and partner company, Wolf's, have been growing steadily.

"We have about 9 routes that go out here a day between both companies so it can get pretty busy," said Mitchell.

But more customers means more deliveries. Taken 2 The Cleaners offers free pick-up and delivery, while it may be convenient for the customers -- Murray takes a hit.

"Gas has always been a large expense to us as a business. It's something that you can't control," said Murray.

According to Triple A, prices for regular are hovering around $2.22 a gallon and even under $2 in some areas.

"This time I was putting anywhere from $90-$104 for a tank and the last time I gassed up on Tuesday was $54," said Mitchell.

These are the lowest holiday gas prices since 2008.

"It's actually saving us as a between about 40-50% on our transportation expenses," said Murray.

By catching a financial break, Murray is now able to allocate money elsewhere.

"It definitely helps ease expenses for the company when you're constantly updating with new equipment, new machines, valuable employees, so every little bit helps," said Murray.

For this small business, every penny counts -- folks here are optimistic, but very realistic.

"Can't really last too long but last long as it's happening. I'm going to enjoy it," said Mitchell.

Murray says the lower gas prices enables him to keep customers happy, avoid price increases, and offer more competitive deals and coupons.
