Amazon's fulfillment center in Kenosha reaches critical construction milestones

KENOSHA (WITI) -- Amazon’s one-million-square-foot fulfillment center in Kenosha -- which broke ground in late 2013, has reached a few critical construction milestones including the completed installation of the building’s walls and roof. Interior infrastructure work is now underway at the facility.

“With the fulfillment center construction progressing quickly, there is a lot of excitement in Kenosha about the future of the local economy. These construction milestones achieved by Amazon at its fulfillment center serve as a reminder of all of the jobs and opportunities that soon will be arriving in our community," Kenosha Mayor Keith Bosman said.

The Amazon Fulfillment Center in Kenosha will bring more than 1,000 new full-time job opportunities to the local community.  At the site, employees will pick, pack and ship small items such as books, electronics and consumer goods for customer orders.

Median pay inside Amazon fulfillment centers is 30 percent higher than traditional retail jobs. In addition to highly competitive wages, Amazon also offers employees comprehensive benefits starting on day one that include medical, dental and vision insurance as well as 401(k) with 50 percent match, stock, bonuses and a network of support to help ensure employees succeed. Employees are also eligible for innovative programs like Career Choice, where the company will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

One of Amazon's two buildings in Kenosha has already opened -- the smaller of the two.

The distribution center is located east of I-94 at the intersection with Burlington Road in Kenosha.

Amazon has told city officials that it aims for a spring 2015 occupancy on the second building.
