A beautiful day for a walk through the woods! Families enjoy "Winterfest" at Boerner Botanical Gardens

HALES CORNERS (WITI) -- A fun event at the Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners this weekend for parents with kids who are getting a little stir crazy this winter! "Winterfest" featured guided walks through the arboretum and winter walks through the woods, along with indoor winter-themed activities for kids.

"We thought -- give him something different to do," Jason and Megan Groothousen said.

The Groothousen family decided to venture out to the Boerner Botanical Gardens Sunday, January 25th to experience "Winterfest."

"It`s just a very friendly community-oriented experience and keeping kids busy," Ellen Hayward, president of the "Friends of Boerner" organization said.

It was just what the Groothousens were looking for, and their young son couldn't get enough!

"He loves it. Any time we can get him outside, it's perfect," the Groothousen said.

Families were able to take part in a variety of indoor winter-themed activities, including a special craft station. The fun continued as everyone bundled up for a winter walk in the woods.

"It`s kind of nice to just get out there, walk through the woods, take a look at some different things that are offered by Mother Nature in southeastern Wisconsin," Boerner Botanical Gardens Horticultural Manager Michael Kreuser said.

Guided tours focused on the landscape of the Boerner Botanical Gardens.

"There`s a lot of different species of trees out there between the fur and spruce and pine," Kreuser said.

Even though it's cold, sometimes it can be nice to step outside and take advantage of the winter wonderland and all its beauty.
