"It's so much bigger than you would expect!" A look inside Amazon's new Fulfillment Center in Kenosha
KENOSHA (WITI) -- We're getting our first look inside the second of two new Amazon Fulfillment Centers in Kenosha!
"It's so much bigger than you would expect like, just driving by," Indian Trail High School student Addyson Harshburger said.
On Thursday, January 29th, a FOX6 News crew was inside the Amazon Fulfillment Center as construction continues in Kenosha.
"When it is fully operational, we will have millions and millions of products stored in this facility," Amazon spokeswoman Nina Lindsey said.
The building measures more than one million square feet!
"There's enough steel inside this Fulfillment Center to build the Eiffel Tower twice!" Lindsey said.
When it is operational, this building is expected to provide 1,000 full-time positions. It is one of more than 50 Fulfillment Centers nationwide, and more than 109 worldwide.
Thursday marked the first time Amazon has allowed a tour of a fulfillment center prior to its completion, and a class from Indian Trail High School was on hand for the tour.
"It's so -- like, it's ginormous!" Harshburger said.
The Indian Trail students have been selected to sculpt a secret art project using scraps of material from the Fulfillment Center's construction.
"It's like, so much excitement coming through my body right now. I just can't wait till it has finally been built and finally finished just so everyone can see our work," Indian Trail student Tony Ciardo said.
"When they dropped of the dumpster, our students were pulling stuff out and they're like 'oh, look at that! That's from there, and that's from there,'" Indian Trail Art Teacher Sarah Gapinski said.
While the Amazon folks can't say just yet when the facility will be operational, they do say the student art project will be on display in front of the entrance.
This is the second of two Amazon Fulfillment Centers in Kenosha. The first building that has already opened is the smaller of the two. Amazon has told city officials that it aims for a spring 2015 occupancy on the second building.
The centers are located east of I-94 at the intersection with Burlington Road in Kenosha.
