Jasmine Beets ordered to pay $4,500 restitution, convicted of killing 73-year-old Lee Green in crash

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Restitution has been set for 22-year-old Jasmine Beets -- accused of driving while suspended, and getting into a crash that killed 73-year-old Lee Green in June of 2013.

Lee Green

In court for a restitution hearing Thursday, January 29th, the victim's family requested $4,500 for funeral expenses. The defense argued Green's estate received $50,000 from the insurance settlement following the crash, and disputed whether this would be a duplicate payment.

In the end, the court ordered that Beets pay $4,500 within 90 days (by April 29th, 2015) unless there is something submitted to the court that the payment of funeral expenses was part of the resolution of the civil matter.

Failure to pay will result in a civil judgement.

Beets has been sentenced to 21 months in prison with credit for six days served, and 30 months of extended supervision. That sentence was stayed, and Beets was placed on probation for three years.

She's been ordered to serve one year in the House of Correction with work/school release. She was ordered to report on January 8th.

As conditions of her probation, Beets must pay all court costs associated with the case, and serve 125 hours of community service. Her driver’s license has been revoked for six months. She is not to drive without a valid license.

This, after she pleaded no contest to a felony charge of knowingly operating while suspended, causing death. A charge of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle was dismissed.

The crash occurred on June 13th, 2013 — just before midnight near the intersection of N. Teutonia and W. Fairmount Avenue in Milwaukee.

When officials arrived at the scene of the crash — they observed the operator of the striking vehicle — Jasmine Beets, receiving medical treatment. 73-year-old Lee Green was taken to Froedtert Hospital after the crash — and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The criminal complaint issued against Beets says a check with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation revealed Beets’ driver’s license was suspended.

The crash occurred at an intersection where three roads converge — those being N. Teutonia, W. Cameron Ave. and N. 28th Street.
