TOWN OF VERNON (WITI) — The “Smokey Bear” sign stolen from in front of the Town of Vernon Fire Station #2 has been located — and is back with the fire department.

Officials say the sign was found by a Town of Vernon employee — it had been discarded in front of the Town Hall. Although it is damaged, officials say the sign should be able to be repaired and remounted.

The sign had been stolen sometime on Sunday, February 1st. Officials say the thieves cut the sign framing multiple times with a chainsaw to steal the “Smokey Bear” image that was secured to the frame.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident and the Vernon Fire Department is asking its citizens of the community to maintain an awareness of their neighborhoods and watch out any additional suspicious activities. If you have information, you’re urged to call the Waukesha Sheriff Dispatch at 262-446-5070 or Vernon Fire Station #1  at 262-662.2079.
