(CNN) -- A Washington mother and father are in custody after police found their three children living alone -- in deplorable conditions.
Lake Stevens, Washington police say the children -- ages seven, three and 11 months were locked in a home with no food or heat.
Police were tipped off that the kids may have been left home alone.
When they got to the home, officers spoke with a seven-year-old female who was padlocked in the home from the inside. Police found the 11-month-old child locked in a bedroom. The baby was rushed to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia and dehydration.
Police say the parents who care for the children were nowhere to be found, and they don't know how long the kids were by themselves.
The parents have been identified as Mark Dorson and Amanda Ann Foley, both 33 years old. Both are in custody, facing charges including felony criminal mistreatment.
"Sad that the place was just a real wreck inside and feces, the stink, and the smell in there was terrible. I couldn't believe kids were even living in there," neighbor Greg Surdy said.
"I'm just shocked. Why? Why do that to your own children?" neighbor Victoria Vanackeren said.
All three of the children are in state custody. Police say the family has a history with Child Protective Services.
A family member says this was all a big misunderstanding.
