LATEST: Man taken to the hospital for evaluation following tactical situation in Cudahy

CUDAHY (WITI) -- Cudahy police took a man into custody following a tactical situation that shut down S. Lake Drive between Layton Avenue and Cudahy Avenue for more than five hours Wednesday, February 11th.

Police say that man is in his late 20s. Police were called out to the scene by someone requesting a welfare check of the man after he had apparently been making suicidal statements to family members.

Cudahy police dispatched officers to the 4600 block of S. Lake Drive and attempted to make contact with the man, but he refused to answer the door.

The South Shore Tactical Team was summoned and roads were closed.

"I saw the barricade and I saw the SWAT truck come up, and I was like, 'okay that can't be normal.' Thought it was a joke. I got outside and there was five guys with assault rifles standing outside my door so, yeah it kind of became real," a neighbor said.

No one was evacuated.

The man was taken into custody around 6:45 p.m. The initial phone call to police came in around 1:15 p.m.

Cudahy firefighters took the man to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

No one was injured.
