"It seems intriguing, but a little different:" Fifty Shades of Grey movie causing controversy

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Backlash over a very talked-about film. Women's groups are standing up against Fifty Shades of Grey -- calling it violent and disturbing. But moviegoers say it's just that, a movie.

At the Downer Theater on Milwaukee's east side, there is anticipation for a new film with a lot of buzz.

"I'm excited, I'm excited to see what happens," said Kalee Lafler, moviegoer.

The newly released Fifty Shades of Grey is a film based on the very popular book by the same name. It depicts a sexual relationship that involves bondage and sadomasochism.

It's being called an erotic film but critics are calling it disturbing.

"Love doesn't hurt, love shouldn't hurt. It gives the message that violence can equal love," said the Director of The Women's Center in Waukesha, Angela Mancuso.

Mancuso hasn't seen the film or read the book, but believes Hollywood is sending the wrong message.

"Not every relationship like what's depicted in the movie was a happy ending," said Mancuso.

Mancuso says the reality is not always as glamorous.

"There are thousands of women today who are in this sexual violence dynamic who do not want to be and who are greatly harmed and traumatized by this," said  Mancuso.

The critics are not stopping moviegoers, but some are entering the theater a little hesitant.

"It seems intriguing, but a little different I guess," said Madeline French, moviegoer.

Ready to draw a conclusion of their own.

"I'm not sure, I'm a little skeptical," said French.

The theater expects some long lines on Valentine's Day.

Meantime, some women's groups are encouraging people to donate $50 to women's groups instead of seeing this film.
