Love is in the air: Couples tie the knot at Milwaukee County Courthouse

MILWAUKEE (WITI) --  Friday the 13th is known as one of the most unlucky days of the year. However, for some Milwaukee couples, it could be the most romantic day of their life.

Room 509 of the Milwaukee County Courthouse might not be the most romantic place you can think of, but for Mary and Alfonzo, it's the sacred spot where they'll say "I-do."

With roses, hearts and cookies, the room is decorated for Valentine's Day. However, because the Milwaukee County Courthouse is closed Saturday, February 14th, all wedding ceremonies  have to take place on the 13th.

In the past, four times more weddings have been booked on Valentine's Day than any average day. But because Friday the 13th has an unlucky connotation, the number of registered couples is down.

"Historically the 13th is associated with things people don`t like to think about, but some people see it as a different kind of demarcation of a very special occasion," Judge Maxine White said.

But Mary and Alfonzo aren't letting a little superstition get in the way of a lifetime of happiness.

"I believe in God and the love that we can provide between one another," Alfonzo Brown said.
