Newcastle Place, St. Marcus School students celebrate Black History Month

MEQUON (WITI) -- Residents of Newcastle Place, a full service senior living community in Mequon, along with second grade students from St. Marcus School in Milwaukee, celebrated Black History Month on Monday, February 16th.

"We're learning about Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Gabby Douglas, and lots of other people, which makes me really proud to be an African-American," said Avana Kelly, a second grade student at St. Marcus School.

The students delivered a presentation and trivia on Black History Month highlighting the achievements of African-Americans throughout history. Following the presentation, each student was paired with a Newcastle Place resident for one-on-one discussions and reflections. St. Marcus School students also performed a song for Newcastle Place residents.

"We've talked about a lot of the important people of black history and covered a lot of different biographies, and just the different things that have happened over the years," said Eric Sando, a second grade teacher at St. Marcus School.

This is the second year St. Marcus students have visited Newcastle Place. It's a tradition they plan to continue.

"Our goal for all of our students, is to raise them to be in their communities serving others," Sando said.
